Reflecting on My GAME Plan

Reflecting on My GAME Plan
Reflection is the main key in learning.  John Dewey said, “We don’t learn from experience, we learn by reflecting on it” (Marzano, 2010. p. 295).  It is this process of reflection and self evaluation where the true learning occurs and change happens.  It is through reflection that teachers grow and develop their craft to me more efficient and effective in their jobs (Marzano, 2010).
I look back upon my GAME plan and I am motivated to continue working on my goals.  I have learned a great deal about digital citizenship and the amount of free resources that exist for me to use and implement in my classroom.  I have discovered that there are many options and resources available within my school network that will help me create and implement lessons on digital citizenship.  I also learned about many resources I have for creating and implementing collaborative activities with colleagues and students.  I will be able to use Microsoft Office 365 and Google Documents to share files and lessons I create with the other members of my team and even throughout the school.
I will not be making many changes to my plan when it comes to teaching digital citizenship.  I will be creating and implementing lessons with slight modifications as I will be teaching Kindergarten instead of third grade.  My second goal will need more modification as I will not be able to blog and use email with my kindergarten students they way I had originally planned to with my third graders.  I am planning to use a class blog in which we write the message as a class and I post it to the web.  I am also hoping to use tools like Voice Thread where students could collaborate and share messages without typing.  I do not have all of the details worked out on how I will incorporate the digital and social learning tools in my new adventure but I will continue to work on it.
When it comes to using the game plan with my students I plan to use it as I teach them about reflecting on learning.  It will be something that I do on a simple and basic level as I teach young kindergarteners to make goals, and work on the steps to achieve them.  I will be a process I will work on this year as my experience implementing activities at this new level will be a challenge in itself.  However, despite the challenge it imposes I plan to use the GAME plan model and find a way to imbed it in our learning process.
As for immediate impacts, I had a lot planned.  I was ready to start the year off with a great problem based lesson, however with the grade level change that is no longer the case.  I still plan to use the knowledge I have learned in this course to challenge the level of student thinking and to ask open ended problems of my young students.  It will just need to take a new level of complexity and I will have to go at a slower pace as I learn new standards and begin a new learning situation.  I am excited for the challenge a head but, but I will proceed slowly as I have a lot to learn this year.  I do plan to use a class webpage and class blog where we reflect on learning in our room and collaborate with others  Additionally, I have plans to send class emails with another kindergarten class across town.  Furthermore, I will use programs like PhotoStory3 and others to create class digital stories and post them to our website.  I will being using everything I learned to integrate and combine content and technology.  Finally, when I feel that improve on my current GAME plan goals, I plan to set new ones.

Continuing to work on my GAME Plan

Continuing to work on my GAME Plan

Goal 1

National Education Standards for Teacher (NETS-T) 4c = Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information

This week I have been spending time reading and planning lessons using the resources on www.commonsense.org.  I love the initial lesson on responsibility and it will work perfectly with the lesson I teach on the 7 Habits of Happy Healthy Kids.  It takes what I already do and adds in the component of digital citizenship.  I am excited to see how this lesson works when I return to school.  I am continuing to work through the modules on the Digital citizen website so that I am familiar with them and ready to guide students when needed as they complete the program.

I have contacted several of my colleagues and started discussing what I am locating about the incorporating digital citizenship into our back to school lessons.  It is difficult to connect with many of them though because we are on summer break.  Either way I am going to continue incorporating the resources into my back to school lessons.  I also have contacted the school principal about having the Paraprofessional who runs the computer lab use the Digital Passport Activities so the entire grade level can benefit.  I am excited to share all of the resources.

Goal 2:

National Education Standards for Teacher (NETS-T) 4d. = Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools.

I am continuing to work on connections with colleagues and I am working with a district coordinator on which tools are going to work based on school infrastructure.  I have established my Edmodo account.  I have been able to get verified as a teaching by obtaining the school code.  In addition, I have added a connection to my Google Drive account for ease of access.
Now, I need to see how I can work on Google Drive while inside of Edmodo and the benefits of these two being connected.  Also I need to figure out how to share documents from my google drive with others.

Does anyone have experience with Edmodo and or the Google Drive connection?  I really want to make this an effective tool in my classroom and a way that students can communicate so any information you can give, tips, tricks, etc. would be great!

Carrying Out My Game Plan

Carrying Out My Game Plan

Goal 1

National Education Standards for Teacher (NETS-T) 4c = Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information

There are several resources that I will need to carry out my plan.
1.      Website, blogs and resources to help me plan and prepare lessons on digital citizenship that will help me integrate it into my back to school lessons on citizenship.
2.      Collaboration and assistance from my grade level team to facilitate a greater understanding of how I can integrate digital citizenship into our curriculum map.
3.      I need to find the time to read resources I received from my colleagues

So far I have been able to complete the following.
1.      I have contacted the school coordinator and there is no district curriculum for digital citizenship.
2.      I have looked briefly at the information available at www.commonsensemedia.org I spent some time there playing the passport modules for 3-5 grades.  I really love them and I plan to use them in my class or see if they can be utilized in the computer lab.
3.      I contacted my principal through email to discuss the idea of the digital citizenship curriculum to include her on direction we may be able to take to implement more school wide.

Goal 2:

National Education Standards for Teacher (NETS-T) 4d. = Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools.

There are several things I need to carry out my plan.
  1. Research which program I wish to use our school email, or epals for student email.
  2. Find e pen pals in a country other than USA that is in North America
  3. Plan and configure the logistics of implementing email, blogs etc in my classroom.  I would like more ideas.

So far I have been able to complete the following.

1.      I have found out from the district coordinator that my students can have office 365 and google drive accounts for school purposes.
2.      There is already a permission slip and I have already contacted the necessary person so that I can obtain the permission slip and put it in my back to school packet.
3.      I have started brainstorming how all of this will work in my classroom and the rules that will exist around it.

There is a lot I need to do to meet these goals and it will take more than the length of this course to reach them as I plan to revise and work on them until I feel proficient.
