Continuing to work on my GAME Plan
Goal 1
National Education Standards for Teacher (NETS-T) 4c = Promote and model
digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of
technology and information
This
week I have been spending time reading and planning lessons using the resources
on www.commonsense.org. I love the initial lesson on responsibility
and it will work perfectly with the lesson I teach on the 7 Habits of Happy
Healthy Kids. It takes what I already do
and adds in the component of digital citizenship. I am excited to see how this lesson works
when I return to school. I am continuing
to work through the modules on the Digital citizen website so that I am
familiar with them and ready to guide students when needed as they complete the
program.
I
have contacted several of my colleagues and started discussing what I am
locating about the incorporating digital citizenship into our back to school
lessons. It is difficult to connect with
many of them though because we are on summer break. Either way I am going to continue
incorporating the resources into my back to school lessons. I also have contacted the school principal
about having the Paraprofessional who runs the computer lab use the Digital
Passport Activities so the entire grade level can benefit. I am excited to share all of the resources.
Goal
2:
National Education Standards for
Teacher (NETS-T) 4d. = Develop and model cultural understanding and global
awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using
digital age communication and collaboration tools.
I
am continuing to work on connections with colleagues and I am working with a
district coordinator on which tools are going to work based on school infrastructure. I have established my Edmodo account. I have been able to get verified as a
teaching by obtaining the school code.
In addition, I have added a connection to my Google Drive account for
ease of access.
Now,
I need to see how I can work on Google Drive while inside of Edmodo and the benefits
of these two being connected. Also I
need to figure out how to share documents from my google drive with
others.
Does
anyone have experience with Edmodo and or the Google Drive connection? I really want to make this an effective tool
in my classroom and a way that students can communicate so any information you
can give, tips, tricks, etc. would be great!

Kathlyn-
ReplyDeleteIt seems that your goals are coming along! Isn't this exciting? I am finding that I am eager to get into the classroom and work with the students on a new level. I have not gotten into specific lessons yet but am still weeding through new resources and tools.
I have now heard of commonsense.org a few times and have added it to my list of websites to check out. I love reading your blog, I feel I get good feedback and information from you. Sharing the resources and contacting the principal seem like good progress. How did the principal respond to these ideas? I am just curious.
As for goal #2, I see you mentioned Edmodo. Do you have any familiarity with this resource? It is also on my list of resources to review. As I read further through your Blog response I see that you do not. Hopefully this is something we can learn and figure out together!
Thank you for your post!
Amanda
Amanda,
DeleteThank you for the complement. I am also eager to work with my students this year and try out some new things, but I am also enjoying my summer and family time. I am lucky because my husband is a teacher too so we all have the summer off together as a family.
I would recommend that you put commonsense.org at the top of your list for review the amount of useful stuff is incredible. I have spent a great deal of time on that site and the lessons and resources are so well laid out and useful without any real modifications needed.
My principle and I are going to meet and talk the first week back to school for teachers. I am the chair for the technology committee so we meet and discuss these types of issues often. This will only be my second year working for this principal and so far she has been open to what I have to say about things.
As for Edmodo my only experience is my daughter using it for her gifted homework. She only has that class once a week and it is a way to keep conversations and learning going between classes. With an app for all tablet platforms it seems like a good option. I am still exploring it though, so as I sift through all of the resources it is one I am looking into.
It will be a new and refreshing school year as I transform my room and the way I teach into something entirely new. It is exciting!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I too like learning together!
Kathlyn
Kathlyn,
ReplyDeleteI like how for goal one that you are working through the Digital Citizenship modules yourself, so that you will be prepared to guide your students through the modules. I have been in classrooms where teachers do not run through modules on their own beforehand, which leaves the teacher spending most of the class time trying to figure out the “nuts and bolts.” Being prepared saves your classroom time!
I like how you are constantly collaborating with your colleagues in order to progress in both of your goals. I have found that I learned more and I am more engaged when I work with others. I read that you are having some difficulties in communicating with colleagues during the summer. What form of communication are you using to communicate? I have also had the same difficulties with communicating with my colleagues. To solve this issue, my colleagues and I established a communication system that listed the following: dates for communication, times for communication, and form of communication. This has proven to be beneficial in ensuring that communication takes place!

Sara,
DeleteI love having the summer to help with my planning. It is true that you need to be prepared and always have a back up plan too! I prefer to know what is being asked of my students so I am better able to trouble shoot and to ensure what they are doing is worth while.
As for communication with my colleagues during the summer, I am using my school email, text messages and facebook to communicate.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

ReplyDeleteKathlyn,
ReplyDeleteI am using Edmodo for my 2nd-5th grade ICT classes. Edmodo is a great app to communicate with students. Google drive is great with sharing documents and collaborative learning. My students send all their homework through Google drive. Here is a YouTube playlist about Google Drive ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLVNoyMkdvo&list=PLDCE614622E1D2691 ).
I would like to share with you a new app from Google that they will launch very soon. It is called Google Classroom (signup URL: https://classroom.google.com/signup / Classroom 101 URL video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K26iyyQMp_g ). Google invited me and our third grade teacher to join and be one of the first teachers to use Google classroom to test drive before making it available for schools. One Google account for all Google products. This will lessen the usernames and passwords for students to remember. Google classroom will seamlessly work with Google drive. No need to sign in to 2 accounts from 2 different websites like Edmodo and Google. I am very excited to try and use Google Classroom in the coming school year when we open in August. I am planning to transfer all my students from Edmodo to Google Classroom.
I hope I was able to help and answer some of your questions about Edmodo and Google drive.
Sincerely,
Alpha
PS: Copy and paste the URL to a new tab in your browser. I tried to make the links work but it won't let me.
Alpha,
DeleteWow one log-in sounds great! I will be looking forward to hearing about this as you get things going this school year. I am defiantly going to watch the video you sent. I am excited to get everything going and see how all this technology integrates into my classroom this school year.
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and feedback!
Kathlyn
Alpha,
DeleteThank you for all of your resources. I am excited to look into those. Is Google Classroom available in the app store? Is it usable for apple products or only Google?
Many Thanks
Abby Roughia
Kathlyn,
ReplyDeleteI love your idea of having your entire grade level use the information you are using! This will allow for all students to have an input on the 7 Habits and have a responsibility to complete this when available. Are you planning on having this be a yearly lesson or just this one time? The use of Edmondo should be a valuable one for the entire lesson. I will be excited to hear your findings using this tool! Your GAME Plan sounds involved and fun!
Lisa
Lisa,
DeleteI am planning to create lessons that can be used each year with slight modifications of course. I have never taught the exact lesson twice, and don't plan to either. I am excited about how things are unfolding and am looking forward to getting back to school and implementing some of the ideas.
Thanks for commenting!
Kathlyn
Kathlyn,
ReplyDeleteI have been creating a "1st 20 days to iPads". This will give teachers in my district the ability to introduce several facets of technology, including digital citizenship and the resources located in the commonsensemedia.org site. It will also introduce them to their device and help them get comfortable with many of the tools on it. Our district also does a character education program that will go right along with the responsibility, and respect. We are really stressing respecting others by not posting photos of others without their permission. I am sorry, I have very limited experience with Edmodo and no experience with Google Drive.
Best wishes
Abby
